Volleyball Tournaments

All players must sign the waiver. Due to the skill level of players at Boomtown, you play at your own risk. There are no girl rules, and players should know this is not recreational-level play.

Match & Scoring (all formats)

Match (side-out) scoring by default; points announced per event.

Match (side-out) scoring is our default — only the serving team scores; win a rally on serve-receive and you earn the serve, not a point. Rally scoring (the USAV standard: a point on every rally regardless of who served, and the receiving team also gains the serve) is used rarely at Boomtown. Points per game are announced per event (league or tournament) based on time and number of games. Every team gets two 1-minute time-outs per set. A team that forfeits a game forfeits the entire tournament. Games start on time — a late start defaults the clock, not the competition. Where no referee is assigned, teams self-officiate; any contested call is an immediate replay. Game balls are Molten Flistatec — one per net, returned after play.

Reverse Co-Ed 4s (Revco)

Our premier format — balanced, fast fours.

Co-ed 4v4 on a women’s-height net, full court. Men may not block above the net, may not jump in front of the 10-foot line (they may jump from behind it), and must attack from below net height. Women are always live to hit and block. Minimum two women per team — teams of three or four women are welcome. All standard Boomtown 4s rules below also apply.

Co-Ed & Gendered 4s

More touches, faster transitions.

4v4 indoor rules on the full court: open-hand receives are legal and a double contact on first contact is permitted. The server may jump and attack from behind the 10-foot line (attacking in front of the 10-foot line is a fault), and may block. Blocks don’t count as a touch; blockers may redirect the ball but can’t load and throw it. No open-hand tipping or finger-directed redirects. Positions don’t rotate, servers do. Intentional hand-set attacks must be square to (parallel with) your shoulders — a non-parallel hand-set sent over the net is a fault. Co-ed divisions: minimum two women; men may substitute for missing women, but those games record as forfeits.

Hand-set standard by division: A/AA — clean, single-contact indoor hand sets with a quick release; no deep dishes or lifts. B/BB — one distinct motion with a quick release. Every division calls its own doubles.

Co-Ed & Gendered 6s

The classic competitive format.

Standard 6v6 on USAV 2025–27 rules — full rotation, standard net heights, refereed brackets (if a referee is delayed, start on time and self-officiate). In co-ed play there is no “girl rule” and no courtesy or gender limitations: men may block and serve women, and everyone competes as equals. Co-ed 6s require a minimum of three women per team; short-handed teams must declare front- and back-row players.

Short-Court Doubles (2s)

Skill, control, defense.

Two-player doubles on a short court under indoor 2s rules — the format that rewards all-around play and ball control. Great for sharpening every part of your game.
